About Bent Theatre
We almost didn’t make it
Like so many performing arts groups, Bent Theatre took a serious hit during COVID. But here's the thing about improvisers — we're trained to adapt, to say "yes, and," to make something out of nothing. So we did exactly that. We came back, we rebuilt, and today Bent Theatre is 24 members strong and better than ever.
Who are we?
Bent Theatre is Charlottesville's improv comedy troupe, performing all across Central Virginia since 2004. We're not a venue — think of us more like a band that plays at breweries, vineyards, coffee shops, theaters and anywhere else that wants a night full of laughs. Cville Weekly's readers voted us Best Performance Troupe in the 2025 Best of Cville — and we're just getting warmed up.
Where do we come from?
This is what makes us a little different: almost every single one of our 24 members started as an audience member or a student. They took an improv class, caught the bug, auditioned, and never looked back. That means our troupe is made up of real people from the Charlottesville community — teachers, scientists, artists, parents, even retirees! — who share one thing in common: they love to make people laugh.
Every week we rehearse together, running games and scenes to keep our timing sharp and our chemistry sharper. When we step on stage at a show, you're watching a group that genuinely knows and trusts each other.
What happens at a show?
You shout a word. We take it from there.
Every scene, every game, every laugh is built entirely from audience suggestions in the moment—no scripts, no safety net, no two shows ever alike. Shows are typically free or donation-based, held at spots around Virginia where you can grab a drink and settle in. Just come ready to laugh — and maybe shout something at us. Maybe we shout back!
Beyond the stage
Improv isn't just for comedy shows. We've brought our skills into the boardroom too, running training events for local businesses that use improv techniques to sharpen communication, teamwork, and on-the-spot thinking. It turns out "yes, and" is pretty good advice in any room.
We're also available for private events — weddings, birthday parties, holiday gatherings, corporate events, and more. If you want your guests to talk about your event, we can help with that.
Want in?
We offer improv classes a few times a year, open to anyone 15 and up. No experience needed — just a willingness to play. Many of our current members started exactly where you are right now.
